Medirex is a leading provider of medical diagnostics in Slovakia. As part of a broader modernization effort, they launched an initiative to redesign LISAPP — the core system used for TRISOMY, a non-invasive prenatal test.

The goal was to improve processing speed, reduce manual errors, and support increasing demand from domestic and international markets. Our collaboration began in 2022 and continues as the system evolves.

Outdated systems slowed down lab operations and increased risk of error

The original LIS was outdated and lacked the usability needed for fast, high-volume lab workflows.

Manual steps and a poorly structured interface created delays, introduced inconsistencies, and made collaboration between clinical and laboratory teams inefficient. As demand for TRISOMY testing grew, the system struggled to scale, putting operational pressure on staff and timelines.

A modern LIS built around real lab workflows and precise data handling

We approached LISAPP as a pilot for Medirex’s wider digital transformation. Our process started with in-depth field research — documenting real lab procedures through interviews, workflow mapping, and video analysis. The system was designed for high usability, stability, and seamless migration without downtime.

The new LISAPP platform simplifies daily tasks through streamlined workflows, reduces cognitive load with a cleaner UI, and ensures traceability across all steps. The frontend was built using Vue.js and Ionic for accessibility across devices. The backend uses Laravel and PHP, structured for modularity and continuous integration to support future scaling.

Every module was tested directly with lab staff in real-world conditions. Prototypes were validated iteratively, with user feedback shaping both functionality and interface details. The system integrates in real time with other lab infrastructure, allowing faster and more reliable communication between teams.

Up to 100× faster processing, fewer manual steps, and improved lab collaboration

The new LISAPP system drastically reduced the time needed to process TRISOMY samples — in some workflows, improvements reached up to 100 times faster execution. Automation minimized the need for manual inputs, reducing human error and improving consistency.

Daily work became more efficient and less stressful for lab technicians, who now benefit from a clearer interface and better visibility into test statuses. Collaboration between clinical and laboratory teams improved through better data flow and task tracking. Beyond immediate performance gains, LISAPP now serves as a scalable foundation for future system expansion and additional test types.
